12. Setting the screen refresh rate of Windows
In their default settings, Windows XP et Windows 2000 use a refresh rate of 60 Hertz. This could cause a problem for those of us with sensitive eyes: the screen looks like it is flashing in a way that you cannot quite see, and you may find it very uncomfortable to look at the screen. Doctors say that the human eye cannot see the flashing when it is around 75 Hertz.
Luckily you can set the refresh rate to a level that is comfortable using your Nvidia of ATI drivers, if your monitor supports higher refresh rates.- Via an Nvidia (Geforce) graphics card:
To open the control panel, right-click on an empty space on your desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel. From the menu on the left, choose Display--> Change resolution.
You will then be able to choose your preferred refresh rate on the right.Tick the box labeled Override refresh rates then set 60Hz via drop down menu in each of the resolutions to force 60Hz refresh rates for all resolutions. Careful, 60Hz can still be tiring for your eyes if you do not have a flat-screen monitor, so we advise that you set it at the highest refresh rate available.
Click on OK to finish.
- Via an ATI (Radeon) driver:
The simplest way to change refresh rates with an ATI graphics card is to use a little program called ATI Tray Tool. This little tool lets you lock your monitors refresh rate in a simple click. You can download it at the following address: http://www.radeon2.ru/atitray/.
This utility gets put in your taskbar and is opened by right clicking on it.You can access a few different things including the Refresh Lock function to define and lock the refresh rate of your screen:

Tick the box labeled Enabled and click on Customize... to access the refresh lock menu:

You can add any resolutions of your choice with the refresh rate you want to give them, to add a resolution and refresh rate to the list click on the up arrow. Do not forget to add the mode of your resolution for 16bits (x16 at the end), and most of all 32bits (x32 at the end), some games use one some use the other.
Click OK to finish.
